Update: WPL Spring 2021 Season Postponed

Updated: Feb 2021

With the Feb 1st deadline recently passed, the 2021 WPL Season is officially postponed to at best include a half schedule this spring. March 1st will be the deadline to determine if the half season will be viable based on a list of factors that must be met for all 10 teams in order to move forward.

These factors include travel restrictions and quarantine regulations according to each club’s local health department as well as mask requirements and group size regulations. Overall the WPL will continue to err on the side of caution and avoid increasing COVID-19 risks for our member clubs and their communities.

With the March 1st deadline fast approaching we are also exploring potential fall options with the hope that when rugby can happen safely again we will have an outlet for our high level players to still get on the pitch this year. We will continue to communicate information as we have it and hope to be seeing you all safe and healthy as soon as possible.

Updated July 2020:

On June 1st we announced that the 2020 WPL Season would be postponed from it’s original start date of August 29th, 2020 and that the league and each member club’s representatives would work to determine a suitable rescheduling plan.

At the latest meeting it was determined that there will officially be no WPL season in 2020, but instead that it was more realistic to set sights on a 2021 replacement.

We have narrowed down our options to 2021 and beyond, but do not have an official schedule to share at this time. Discussions will continue with the league’s representatives to develop the new timeline while continuing to take into consideration local health mandates of each of the 10 major cities across the country that house our member teams as well as World Rugby and USA Rugby return to play protocols and World Health Organization and CDC guidelines.

We will also continue working with USAR Women’s High Performance to support players’ ability to maximize prep for the 2021 World Cup. As a top league in the country we feel it is as important as ever to take the health and safety of our athletes very seriously.
